Miami Beach Beyond the Beach: Local Gems and How to Get Around

Miami Beach has more to visit than its shoreline, and most of what decides whether a plan works is practical: what is open on the day of the visit, how long the trip between two points realistically takes, and which transport is still running at the hour it is needed. This guide covers all three, with hours and rates verified on 8 September 2026 and linked to their official sources.

Two things shape most itineraries. Several popular stops often paired with a Miami Beach itinerary are not on the island: they sit across a causeway in the City of Miami, and each one is labelled as such below. For a private itinerary, explore our chauffeur service in Miami.

The other is timing. The city runs free transport, and it stops earlier than many visitors expect — the trolley at 11 p.m., and Freebee at 10 p.m. from Monday to Saturday and 8 p.m. on Sundays.

Art and culture, with hours worth confirming

The Bass is Miami Beach’s contemporary art museum, at 2100 Collins Avenue. It is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, and open Wednesday to Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. General admission is $15, and entry is free for Miami Beach and Surfside residents. (Verified 8 September 2026.)

The Art Deco Historic District runs through South Beach and includes Ocean Drive. According to the City of Miami Beach, the Miami Beach Architectural District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on 14 May 1979, becoming the first urban 20th-century historic district in the country to be listed; the city’s historic districts cover more than 2,600 buildings across areas including Ocean Drive, Española Way and Flamingo Park. Vehicle access and traffic configurations on Ocean Drive can change. Check current City of Miami Beach notices before planning a vehicle drop-off or pickup.

Wynwood Walls is in the City of Miami, at 2516 NW 2nd Ave, a short drive off the island. It is a ticketed venue rather than an open street: the official site lists daily opening from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., with doors closing ten minutes earlier. (Verified 8 September 2026.)

Where to eat, on and off the island

Lincoln Road is the pedestrian spine of South Beach. According to the Lincoln Road district site, the pedestrian section — Lincoln Road Mall — covers eight of the road’s fifteen blocks, between Washington Avenue and Alton Road. Many businesses in that pedestrian section have no direct vehicle access, so a meeting point is best confirmed in advance near an accessible cross street and in line with the signage posted there at the time.

Little Havana is in the City of Miami, west across the causeway. Crossing in evening traffic takes considerably longer than a map estimate suggests.

Parks and the Everglades

South Pointe Park, at 1 Washington Avenue, sits at the island’s southern tip. The City of Miami Beach lists it as open daily from sunrise to sunset, with paid parking. In local operations, the approach roads and the turnaround area near the park can be congested in the hour before sunset. (Park details verified 8 September 2026; congestion is an operational observation, not a rule.)

The Everglades can be planned in different ways. Shark Valley and an airboat ride are separate experiences and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Shark Valley is an official entrance to Everglades National Park, reached by U.S. 41. Passes can be bought online or at the entrance, and the National Park Service advises arriving an hour and a half to two hours ahead of scheduled tram tours during busy periods. That is arrival guidance for the tram, not an estimate of how long a visit takes.

Airboat rides are run by separate operators. The National Park Service names three approved companies providing services inside Everglades National Park — Coopertown, Everglades Safari Park and Gator Park — and locates the airboat concessions approximately fifteen to twenty minutes east of Shark Valley on Rt. 41. A further operator in the same area, Buffalo Tiger Airboat Tours, states on its own site that it operates within Miccosukee tribal lands and that no park entrance fee is necessary to take a tour. The distinction is worth understanding before choosing, because the two arrangements are not the same kind of visit. (Verified 8 September 2026.)

Evenings and live music

The Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater, at 1700 Washington Ave, sits beside the Miami Beach Convention Center. The Convention Center reports that the Grand Hyatt Miami Beach, its connected headquarter hotel, broke ground in May 2025, that vertical construction is under way and that the 800-room, 17-storey hotel is anticipated to open in late 2027. Before an event, current construction notices from FDOT and current City of Miami Beach road notices are worth checking. (Verified 8 September 2026.)

LIV, at the Fontainebleau at 4441 Collins Avenue, runs from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m., Thursday through Sunday. The venue notes that it may close to the public for occasional special events or private parties. (Verified 8 September 2026.)

E11EVEN and Club Space are in Downtown Miami, off the island. Returning from either to a Miami Beach hotel means crossing back to the island.

Approximate travel times observed in local operations

The ranges below are approximate and were observed in day-to-day operation. They are not guaranteed times, and roadworks, events and weather all change them. There is active construction on the I-395 corridor and on the MacArthur Causeway, a crossing between Downtown Miami and South Beach; current lane closures are published on the FDOT construction map.

Density tends to build roughly between 6:30 and 10:30 in the morning and again between 2:30 and 7:30 in the afternoon. From Thursday to Sunday, traffic in and out of South Beach can pick up from around 6 p.m. and stay heavy until midnight, and on weekends Washington Avenue and Collins Avenue can slow from the early afternoon.

Short trips are the ones that surprise people. Crossing South Beach east to west, between Alton Road and Collins Avenue, can take twenty to thirty minutes on a busy afternoon. Collins Avenue northbound toward Mid-Beach can slow around the hotel cluster near 41st Street.

During large events the city may put temporary traffic plans in place, with access restrictions and diversions that apply only to that event; current notices are published by the City of Miami Beach ahead of each one. Art Basel Miami Beach is scheduled for 4–6 December 2026. (Verified 8 September 2026.)

Getting around: free transit, walking, or a car with a driver

The Miami Beach Trolley is free. The city states that it operates 15 hours a day, from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week, at approximately 20-minute average frequency along each of four routes: South Beach Loop, Middle Beach Loop, Collins Express and North Beach Loop.

Freebee, the city’s free on-demand service covering Mid Beach and parts of North Beach, runs 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturdays and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sundays. It can be requested by app or by phone, and the city recommends booking about 20 minutes ahead.

For those driving themselves, on-street parking is metered, and the rate depends on the zone: $4.00 an hour in the Entertainment District, enforced 24 hours a day, seven days a week; $4.00 an hour in South Beach, enforced 9 a.m. to 3 a.m.; $3.00 an hour in East Middle Beach; and $1.00 an hour in West Middle Beach and in North Beach, each with its own enforcement hours. Garage and lot rates are published separately. Current figures are on the city’s parking meter rates page. (Verified 8 September 2026.)

For short trips within South Beach, walking or the free trolley may be more practical than booking a car by the hour.

A car with a driver tends to earn its place in specific situations, and the BHBB USA® service model is organised around them: an itinerary with several stops or a schedule that may change during the day; back-to-back business meetings where the same vehicle and chauffeur wait between them; luggage, airport, FBO or seaport connections; families and groups who need to stay together with their bags; large events where arrival and departure are the difficult parts; and a late return arranged in advance.

What that costs depends on the trip rather than on a fixed list. The main variables are the vehicle the party and its luggage actually require; whether the booking is a single transfer or a car held for a block of time; how many stops are involved and how long the car is held; the distance, and whether the route crosses to the mainland or out to an airport; and the time of day or event period being travelled in. A tailored quote reflects those trip-specific variables.

Planning a late return

The free options close before the night does. The trolley finishes at 11 p.m., and Freebee finishes at 10 p.m. from Monday to Saturday and at 8 p.m. on Sundays. Venues, meanwhile, run into the small hours — LIV, for instance, until 5 a.m. from Thursday to Sunday.

Between roughly 1:30 and 3:30 in the morning, Collins Avenue and Washington Avenue can fill with people on foot, stopped vehicles and pickups happening at once, and approaching a specific door may stop being realistic. Nights differ, and busy nights differ most.

Arranging the return in advance tends to work better than solving it at 2 a.m.:

  1. Agree the time and the meeting point when booking, rather than shortly before departure.
  2. Use the same spot as the drop-off, if it is still legal and workable at that hour.
  3. Give the exact corner or intersection, and the side of the street if it can be identified confidently.
  4. Choose a fixed, visible landmark that is not in a no-stopping zone.
  5. Describe what you are wearing — it can help the chauffeur identify the passenger.
  6. Wait inside the venue or somewhere lit and populated until the vehicle can approach safely.
  7. Confirm the chauffeur’s name and the vehicle details provided for the booking before boarding. A professional appearance is not verification.

A pre-arranged chauffeur service and an on-demand ride are different arrangements, and the difference is clearest at this hour: with a service booked in advance, the meeting point, the timing and the communication channel are settled beforehand.
